Needing Space
I suppose most music is “programmatic” to some degree or another. In May of 2017 I had a conversation with a writer friend of mine, Gareth Logan, who described the process he uses to create a character. I realized that I do the same thing with music. I can go into an emotional landscape to encapsulate a mood or frame of mind that I may, or may not be actually experiencing, at that moment. Such is the case with “Needing Space”. This piece popped out early on the morning of Thursday, April 27. I didn’t actually get around to composing it until the following day. It describes the feeling you get when someone you love tells you they “need space”. That is almost never good. Usually it means it is time to pack your emotional bags and prepare for a permanent separation. Anyway, that’s what “Needing Space” quickly suggested to me. It describes the chaos that initially ensues, then the sense of resignation, then acceptance for both parties. Resolution can mean either breaking up or reconciliation. Either way, during the period of “space”, one feels a sense that something is missing in your life. In this case, it is the drums. I was after a slow, slightly disoriented jazz ballad in “Needing Space”. I hope you enjoy this, which will be featured on the new “Winter” album I am working on with the “Many of One” gang.
